Web Design - An Overview
You build a bridge, like you build anything, brick by brick. The important this is to know where you are and where you're going.
Summary of main elements in Web Site Design and Publishing, and how we like to work as Psi Pi, in conjunction with Simple Idea:
- Domain registration – You manage and “own” your domain via Ukreg or your own supplier – an annual cost for “rental”
- Hosting – The physical space for hosting your website and email – Simple Idea can manage this for you – annual cost dependant on volumes and requirements. From £50/yr upwards.
- Design – Initial and ongoing design work – cost dependant on amount of work required – no of pages, complexity, amount of design work required – we are happy to manage this process for you, or liaise with 3rd parties on your behalf if necessary (subject to time / cost constraints)
- Search Engine Submission / Link creation / Key Words – Depending on your marketing strategies, this may or not be important – costs can vary, and effectiveness depends on many factors
- Google Adwords / PPC / Online Marketing - We can advise you on suggestions and solutions
- Blogs - we thoroughly recommend using a blog, their easy
- Analytics - how many visitors did you have? did they click where you wanted them to? - we can show you how to tell.
Domain Registration:
As discussed please register your domain with the registry service of your choice. Our preferred supplier is Ukreg. They register the majority of our domains and hence we are familiar with their interface and operations. (Website is: www.ukreg.com ). If you need help with registering the domain please ask us. Please ensure you are aware of the transfer costs, and other policies of whichever registry service you choose to use.
We suggest that when registering the domain name, you register both the .com and .co.uk domain names, if possible. The extra domain cost is fairly minimal, and will give you a greater coverage. Other suffixes are available, and you should take advice on IP law etc.. if you feel this is required or act on your own judgement in this regard.
When registering the domain select the final option: “This domain will be hosted by another ISP using the DNS servers given. (Specify the host name of each DNS server, not the IP address. e.g.: ns1.dnsserver.co.uk)”
When entering the DNS details please ensure these are correct as below. (This details where the site will be hosted) (See screenshot at end of letter)
DNS Details
- Primary DNS: ns1.psithinking.com
- Secondary DNS: ns2.psithinking.com
In this way, you will have full legal “ownership” of the domain name and be able to manage the renewal costs automatically yourselves. You will also have the ability to change hosts by changing the DNS details etc..
Hosting, Email setup, & Basic Support from £75 / yr per domain.
This will include hosting of the website, creation of email accounts which can be accessed via webmail or via pop3 accounts. We will manage the process of uploading your website to the web, if we are also doing the design work for you.
We will assume you will wish to renew the hosting of the site at the same rates unless I hear from you to the contrary. Please note 28 days notice will be required should you wish not to renew the site/hosting.
We cannot guarantee 100% uptime, but will endeavour to the best of our ability to maintain an online presence as far as possible. Any disruption will be prenotified and kept as minimal as is required (i.e. for server updates etc..) We are not liable in anyway for any costs etc.. due to downtime or hosting issues. And your use of our service is deemed to be consent of this. UK Law is always to govern.
Design – Initial / Ongoing
We design mainly static template driven websites using CSS to enable consistent design look and feel. These also present the ability to make changes quickly and easy should a rebrand occur, more pages be required or content require updating.
Should be dynamic sites be required we have a range of companies with which we can liaise to provide dynamic sites, flash, or bespoke E-commerce solutions. However the costs for these are considerable more than those for a static site.
We will commence design work on receipt of copy – text / layout / images, or as otherwise agreed by ourselves. You agree that you are the legal owner of all text, images etc.. and have full rights to use any such content or trademarks. You will also be fully responsible for all legal obligations in relation to the website and its content.
